Drowning in Sorrow

Drowning in Sorrow
 18 x 24 Oil on canvas
Simply stated, "Drowning in Sorrow" is my vision of an emotional loss.

For me, that concept spans sixty-plus years of life and is a reoccurring experience that I dread. Yet, it is a part of life that all of us must deal with in our years on this earth. It is a vision of the overwhelming plunge into dark sadness that we feel when an emotional shock rocks us with loss. It could be a break-up with a lover, a sad goodbye, the loss of a pet, a forced move from a place loved, an illness, a divorce, yet mostly, from the death of someone you love.

FYI: You may wonder why I use women in paintings that have emotional themes. The simple answer is, a women's beauty is what emotionally motivates me. Many of my themes are universal, (this one is Sorrow,) so either way, a man or a woman can relate. In my realm, a woman's form better reflects emotions. (But there are times for a man.)

(I am still working on this painting, so you see it in its unfinished state.)

Lonely Blues

Lonely Blues
 24 x 24 Oil on canvas

Wrapped in lonely blue contemplation, as fear still partially hides the naked truth, she seeks to understand love.

What is love? Do we give love freely without expectation of any return? Does love ever end? Can love end for some but not for others?

Is love as a secret cove where two souls intimately share their lives while floating in a warm blue pool of sharing, fed by a waterfall of passion?

Is it possible that the waterfall can change to one of sad misting tears?

One searches and prays for answers.

Bashfully Bedazzling by Charles Asher

"Bashfully Bedazzling" Oil on Canvas 18 x 24

Abstract of a Japanese Girl strolling in the rain.

On our way to Hong Kong for Chinese New Years (The year of the Dragon), Rhonda and I had a layover in Japan's Tokyo airport. It was a three hour layover and being bored I left Rhonda in the waiting area where she was deeply immersed in her Nora Roberts romance novel.

I strolled the airport and took in the sights. It was raining outside so I didn't go out but instead viewed the street below from a window two stories up. It was a large window that was being pelted with rain, which ran streaking down the window and blurred the view. It created the perfect atmosphere for a cold and rainy day with me stuck waiting in a noisy, crowded building.

At one point, the hard rain stopped leaving only a foggy drizzle. That's when I saw far-off figures along the side of the road. From that distance, I could not make out details except that they were approaching. Closer, I saw two female figures holding umbrellas. As they approached even closer, I could make out an older woman and a young woman, the older slightly in front. I judged the young one to be in her late teens or early 20's. They looked like mother and daughter. I studied their approach and, of course, focused on the young woman. As they came into clear view, the sun broke partially out, and light sparkled off the young woman's wet umbrella. I could see she wore traditional Japanese clothing.

The picture of her was so burned into my mind, that I sketched it on the plane as we headed for Hong Kong.
